Nomad eSIM Questions

25+ questions from real digital nomads, answered honestly.

Getting Started

What is an eSIM and do I need one as a digital nomad?
An eSIM is a digital SIM card embedded in your phone. For digital nomads, it's essentially essential — it allows you to get local data in each country without buying physical SIM cards, and a regional European plan covers 30+ countries automatically. If you're working remotely across Europe, eSIM will save you time, money, and connectivity headaches.
Can I use eSIM and keep my home number active?
Yes — this is the key advantage. Use Dual SIM: your home physical SIM for calls and texts (keeping your number for clients, banking, family), and the travel eSIM for data. You get cost-effective local data while remaining professionally reachable on your regular number. Configure in Settings → Cellular → which SIM handles what.
How do I activate an eSIM?
Purchase a plan, receive a QR code by email, scan it in your phone's cellular settings (iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan; Android: Settings → Network → SIM manager → Add eSIM). The download takes 1–3 minutes over Wi-Fi. Activate before you travel so you arrive with data ready.
Does my phone need to be unlocked?
Yes. A carrier-locked phone will only accept eSIM profiles from the locking carrier. Contact your carrier to request an unlock — most do this free after the contract period, and many will unlock immediately for international travel. This is a one-time step.

Data & Plans

How much data do I need for a month of remote work?
Light work (email, messaging, occasional calls): 5–10GB/month. Regular remote work (daily video calls, cloud work): 20–30GB/month. Heavy use (streaming, large file transfers, constant video): 40GB+/month. Always choose a plan with more data than you estimate — running out mid-deadline is worse than having leftover data.
Are "unlimited" eSIM plans actually unlimited?
Most "unlimited" plans include a high-speed data threshold (e.g., 20–50GB) after which speeds are throttled to 1–5 Mbps. This is usually fine for basic browsing and messaging but may struggle with HD video calls. Read the fair use policy carefully and choose plans with high-speed thresholds that match your actual usage.
Can I hotspot my laptop from an eSIM?
Yes, most plans support hotspot/tethering. Some plans restrict hotspot or count it against a separate allowance. For nomads who regularly hotspot their laptop, choose a plan that explicitly allows tethering without restrictions. Check the plan terms before purchasing.
When does my plan's validity period start?
This varies by provider. Some start from purchase, some from installation, some from first use. Plans that count from first use are most flexible for nomads who purchase in advance. Check the plan description carefully — this is usually clearly stated.

Travel & Connectivity

Will my eSIM work across all EU countries?
Regional European eSIM plans typically cover 30–50 countries. Check the coverage list of your specific plan before purchasing. Note that Switzerland, Norway, and the UK are not EU members and may not be included in all "European" plans.
Is eSIM reliable enough for client video calls?
In most European cities, yes. 4G LTE provides more than enough bandwidth for HD video calls. For important calls, position yourself near a window for better signal, avoid peak congestion hours (12–2pm, 6–9pm), and have a backup plan (co-working Wi-Fi) for critical meetings.
What should I do if my eSIM stops working in a new country?
Toggle Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds, then off. If still no service, go to cellular settings and manually select a network. Try different available operators — your eSIM plan may have better roaming agreements with some operators than others. Restart your device if manual selection doesn't help.

Troubleshooting

My eSIM profile disappeared after an update. What do I do?
Check Settings → Cellular — the profile is likely still stored but deactivated. Re-enable it from the SIM management menu. If the profile is genuinely gone, contact your provider with your order number to request a new QR code. Most providers re-issue for free.
I accidentally deleted my eSIM profile. Can I recover it?
Once deleted from the device, the profile cannot be recovered locally. Contact your provider immediately with your order details. Most providers can re-issue a new QR code, though some charge a small fee. This is why it's good practice to save your provider's contact details offline.
Can I transfer my eSIM to a new phone?
eSIM profiles are bound to the specific device hardware and cannot be directly transferred. If you get a new phone, contact your provider to request a new QR code for the new device. Some providers allow this for free; others charge a small re-issuance fee.
